Light up your July indoors and out.

As the days get longer and the nights get shorter, we are reminded of the power of light. Just like fireworks bring joy and excitement to July celebrations, good lighting in our homes has the potential to do the same. It can completely transform our home, create a magical ambiance, and set a mood in any room.

Lighting can set your home ablaze with brilliance. There are many styles and shapes that fit a variety of needs, create different moods with lighting, and shine beautifully.

Whether you’re looking to add a touch of sparkle to your living room or create a romantic setting for a cozy night in, we have the tips you need to light up your home.

Getting started

Lighting is more than just a flip of a switch. There are a few things to keep in mind when designing a new layout, redecorating, or even moving homes!

  • Consider the activities that you’ll be doing in each room. For example, if you’re reading in a room, you’ll need bright task lighting. If you’ll be relaxing in a room, you’ll want softer ambient lighting.
  • Think about the size of the room. Let your light fixture be the Goldilocks—not too big, not too small, but just right. A small room will need less lighting than a larger one.
  • Pay attention to the color of the light. Different colors of light can create different moods. For example, warm white light (3000 Kelvin) is often used to create a relaxing atmosphere, while cool white light (4000 Kelvin) is often used to create a more energetic atmosphere. Just because a bulb is LED does not mean it is overly bright and blinding! LEDs come in all types of lighting temperatures.
  • Break away from the matchy-matchy. It can be a beautiful thing when you embrace eclectic style. Maybe focus more on a specific color pallet as opposed to all items being part of a “set.”

Enhancing what you have

One of the most fundamental aspects of good lighting design is how it improves visibility. Adequate lighting ensures that you can navigate your home safely and efficiently. Task lighting helps you see what you’re doing, while ambient lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. When used together, these two types of lighting can create a space that’s both functional and stylish.

Task lighting plays a vital role in specific activities such as reading, cooking, or working on a computer. It should be bright enough to provide good visibility, but not so bright that it’s harsh or glaring. To enhance your existing task lighting, consider the following:

  • Change your light bulbs. If you’re still using incandescent bulbs, consider switching to LED. LEDs are not only energy-efficient and long-lasting, but they also emit a brighter light, making tasks easier to accomplish.
  • Relocate your fixtures. If your light fixtures aren’t optimally positioned, try moving them. For instance, if your lamp is too far from your desk, bringing it closer will reduce eye strain and provide better illumination for your workspace. A professional can also help relocate more fixed lights such as dining room chandeliers or pendants.
  • Install dimmer switches. Installing dimmer switches allows you to adjust the brightness of your lights, catering to different moods and tasks. Whether you want a cozy ambiance or focused lighting, dimmers offer the flexibility to create the perfect atmosphere any day of the week.
  • Illuminate with abundance. Sometimes adding another light can completely transform the use of a space. Consider professionally installing additional ceiling lights or a bright chandelier if your current space is naturally dim. Your cleaning days will hit different!

Ambient lighting creates a general atmosphere in a room and sets the overall mood. It is usually softer and more diffused than task lighting. Here are some creative ideas to enhance the ambient lighting to your home:

  • Install wall sconces. Wall sconces are an elegant way to add ambient lighting to a room without taking up too much space. Put them on either side of a doorway, window, bathroom vanity, or over bedside tables for a touch of captivating mood lighting.
  • Add a floor lamp to the mix. Floor lamps are perfect for infusing ambient lighting into larger spaces. Position them in room corners or along the perimeter of your living room to create depth and a warm glow.
  • Spread it like butter. Ambient lighting ensures a room is evenly lit so you can move around safely. From lighted ceiling fans and recessed lights to chandeliers and table lamps, having these options available is important not only for general mobility but also for fulfilling specific needs and achieving your desired aesthetic.

Remember, both task and ambient lighting are crucial for creating a well-lit and functional home. The combination of these two lighting styles ensures that you have an ideal balance in every room.

Setting a mood and atmosphere

Lighting has a remarkable ability to create different moods in our homes without changing anything else. By strategically using various types of lighting, you can transform any room into a vibrant space for social gatherings, a romantic setting for two, or a cozy haven for relaxation. Here are a few ways we curate specific lighting to set your desired mood:

  • Warm and Cozy. Opt for warm-toned lighting (around 3000 Kelvin). Consider using table lamps with warm LED bulbs, candlelight, or string lights to infuse a gentle glow. Dimmers are also your best friend, allowing you to adjust the brightness to achieve the desired cozy temperature.
  • Dramatic and Stylish. Play with contrasts and shadows. Combine direct and indirect lighting to create depth and intrigue. Install spotlights to highlight art or architectural elements. Wall washers or uplighting can create a striking effect, emphasizing textures and adding a touch of sophistication.
  • Bright and Energetic. Go for brighter and cooler lighting options (around 4000 Kelvin). Swap your ceiling lights for daylight or cool white LED bulbs to invigorate the space. If your space has windows, embrace natural lighting during the day by installing new window treatments with sheer or solar shade fabric.

Lighting is an art form that allows you to paint with luminesce and shape the mood of your home. By experimenting with different types, you can craft a unique environment that has your name written all over it.

Have fun with it!

Different types of lighting serve specific purposes, but each purpose also presents itself in a wide variety of styles, colors, and materials. Your dated dining room chandelier may produce light, but it might not give you that happy feeling when you walk into your home that screams “this is me!”

A shiny, metal modern chandelier can give a room a sleek and contemporary feel. A vintage, charming floor lamp can add a touch of warmth and nostalgia. A woven textured pendant light might embrace a bohemian style with a more natural look. When the perfect light fixture for you presents itself, there is a feeling that just clicks.

Design possibilities are endless, so don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with your selections! After all, your home is your own personal canvas, so design it to reflect your unique personality. And if you need that extra assurance and professional guidance, we have extensive knowledge and a wide library of selections to help find you the perfect fixtures for you and your home.
